These Crockpot French Onion Meatballs combine juicy meatballs with sweet caramelized onions and rich broth, all topped with melty cheese. A slow cooker twist on a French classic!
2–3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 tbsp butter
24 oz frozen or homemade meatballs
2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2–3 garlic cloves, minced
½ tsp dried thyme (or 2 sprigs fresh)
1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
Salt & pepper, to taste
Optional: 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (for thickening)
Place sliced onions and butter in the bottom of a slow cooker.
Add meatballs on top of onions.
Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and thyme.
Cover and cook on Low for 6–8 hours or High for 3–4 hours.
Optional: To thicken, mix cornstarch and water, stir in, and cook 15 minutes more on High.
Add shredded cheese during the final 10–15 minutes, cover to melt.
Serve hot over mashed potatoes, noodles, or in hoagie rolls.
Use turkey or plant-based meatballs as needed. For more caramelized flavor, sauté onions first. For broiled cheese, transfer meatballs to a baking dish, add cheese, and broil.
